About Ben
A paddler’s coach
Hi, I’m Ben Keys, surf ski and kayak coach. I have been an athlete for most of my life, from around 12 years old. I competed in swimming and rowing before moving into surf lifesaving, K1 kayak sprint and marathon, and more recently ocean surf ski paddling and river racing. I have achieved either national titles or honours in all of those sports (results listed below).
While learning how to paddle I studied Exercise and Sports Science at Otago University, BPhEd (hons). Through this I built a real interest in strength training. I was often one of the stronger athletes, but having started paddling a bit later (at 21) there was lots to learn to become an effective paddler.
During my time in the NZ kayak high performance system I also had the opportunity to study strength training for kayak performance as a Masters via AUT. I never finished it due to personal circumstances, but lots was learnt and banked away for the future.
I have had many great coaches, including plenty of NZ paddling legends. But I could never find a well-rounded kayak or surf ski coach who had experience in training prescription, strength training for kayak or surf ski, and deep technical knowledge of the sport. Over time I have built up that knowledge, and I hope to share it with keen paddlers through this website to advance their own paddling.
