When you’re serious about your fitness or performance goals, following a structured training program often feels like the right thing to do. And sometimes, it absolutely is programs bring direction, progression, and accountability.
You don’t always need to be on a training program, and in fact it can sometimes work against you progressing and being consistent over time.
Let’s dive into why.
1. Improvement Isn’t Linear Your Program Shouldn’t Be Either
Training programs are usually designed with the assumption that life runs smoothly.
You’ll complete every session, hit every target, and your body will respond exactly as predicted.
In reality, flexibility is key. Sometimes being able to move sessions around because of life, weather, or simply energy levels is what keeps training enjoyable and consistent over the long term.
2. Flexibility to Train With Others
If we’re too strict with training programs, we can miss opportunities to train with others or build social connections.
Training with a group can boost motivation, bring some much needed variety, and help us stay more consistent over time, which can have a greater effect on performance than a “perfect” week of solo training.
3. Listening to Your Body Is a Skill
Many athletes are so used to following programs that they lose touch with their own internal feedback systems.
Energy levels, soreness, mental fatigue, these are signals you should respond to.
But if the calendar says “10 x 1000m,” a lot of people ignore what their body is screaming at them.
Training without a formal plan, even for just a few weeks, can reconnect you with how you feel, not just what’s written down.
4. Avoiding Training Program Burnout
If you’re constantly chasing numbers, checking boxes, and pushing for the next milestone, it’s easy to lose the love for paddling.
Taking a break from formal programming can refresh your motivation, rebuild your passion, and remind you why you train in the first place.
If you’re between events or in your off-season, it might be the perfect time to stay in touch with your fitness but in a more relaxed, enjoyable way.
Staying consistent is the key to long term progress, and that’s a lot easier when you actually enjoy what you’re doing.
Training programs are powerful tools for building specific fitness when you’re chasing a goal.
But you don’t always need a program.
Sometimes being a little ad hoc managing your training load based on how you feel keeps you motivated, consistent, and ready for when it is time to ramp up for that next big goal.
At Strong Paddler, our membership gives you access to a bunch of resources to help you craft your own training week without committing to a full program.
Maybe you’re after some fresh gym session ideas, different paddling workouts, or new exercises to spice up your current routine.
And when you’re ready for a custom designed program built to help you achieve your next big goal I can design that for you too. As it happens I often program “non program” weeks into your plan if your with me for an extended programming period (I don’t charge these either :))
