The top arm mechanics of the kayak stroke can be confusing and you have heard it all before.
- Keep your top arm back
- Keep the paddle angle positive
- Stop using your arms
Although technically correct, as the receiver of these technical cues you’re often left wondering what the coach meant. You kind of get it but in practise you have to move that top arm forward at some point to take the next stroke.
This is where feeling the correct position and movement training become important.
In the video below there are 2 effective drills for helping you feel the correct position. Once you have that feeling you’re understanding is now complete and you can search for the same feeling out on the water, making you a stronger paddler.
Combine these drills with moving the blade out laterally with your rotation and feel the difference in power through your stroke. (Next you tube video if you have subscribed)
Even better if you want to have me work through these drills in person with you please reach out. Im available in person and online .
